How Can You Maintain Good Oral Health At Home?

Regular oral hygiene at home is extremely important. The ADA recommends brushing your teeth and flossing at least twice a day. However, if you suffer from gingivitis, you may need even more than that to combat the infection.

Brushing your teeth thoroughly at home can help remove plaque and tartar buildup. Plaque is a sticky film, and tartar is a hardened form of plaque. Both can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Removing plaque and tartar can help protect your mouth from cavities and gum disease. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day is recommended, and flossing at least once a day is also recommended to keep your mouth as healthy as possible.

Brushing and flossing are both important parts of oral hygiene, but did you know that skipping flossing is not a good idea? While brushing your teeth removes plaque from the surfaces of your teeth, flossing removes plaque from between your teeth where brushes cannot reach.

If you don’t floss, plaque can harden into tartar, which can only be removed by a dental professional. Plaque that isn’t removed by brushing or flossing can eventually lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

Rinsing is one of the first oral hygiene steps at home. When you brush your teeth, the fluoride in toothpaste helps strengthen enamel, which helps to protect teeth from decay. However, bacteria from food particles and plaque can still build up around the teeth. Rinsing the plaque away with water or mouthwash is a simple way to prevent plaque buildup.

Avoiding Tobacco

Inhaling tobacco smoke and using other tobacco products can cause a wide range of oral health issues, including gum disease, tooth discoloration, and oral cancer. If you currently use or have used tobacco in the past, talk to your dentist or doctor about programs that can help you quit.

Eating a Healthy Diet

Eating well is essential to maintaining good dental health. A balanced diet provides nutrients that help your teeth stay strong. At a minimum, you should be consuming the following every day:

  • Dairy products, such as milk, cheese, and yogurt
  • Lean meats, such as chicken, pork, and turkey
  • Leafy greens and other vegetables
  • Whole grains, such as brown rice, oatmeal, and whole-wheat bread
  • Fruits
  • Low-fat or fat-free dairy products
  • Low-fat or fat-free meats
  • Fruits and vegetables

In addition to eating a healthy diet, it’s also important to avoid food and drinks that can harm your teeth.

Regular Dental Care

When patients receive regular dental cleanings and exams, their gingival health is improved. Regular dental visits allow patients to clean off hard calculus and plaque buildup, which allows patients to maintain optimal oral health.
